Professional Members - CTRS®

The Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS®) credential is granted by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC®). This credential is the recognized standard for professionals working in the field of Recreation Therapy and signifies that the holder has met rigorous academic, experiential, and examination requirements.

The Professional Members CTRS® category is reserved exclusively for members who are accredited by and in good standing with the NCTRC® as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist.

CTRS® holders are required to adhere to the NCTRC® Code of Ethics and maintain their credentials through ongoing professional development, continuing education, and recertification every five years.

The CTRS® credential is recognized nationally and internationally as the standard of excellence in the field of Recreation Therapy, ensuring the highest level of competence and professionalism in therapeutic recreation services.

Qualifications:

  • Educational Requirements: Candidates must have a baccalaureate degree or higher in Recreation Therapy or a related field, along with coursework that meets NCTRC® standards.
  • Field Experience: Candidates are required to complete a minimum number of hours of supervised clinical fieldwork in Recreation Therapy settings.
  • Certification Exam: After fulfilling the educational and experiential requirements, candidates must pass the NCTRC® certification exam to be awarded the CTRS® designation.

Scope of Work:

CTRS® professionals use recreation and leisure-based interventions to help individuals with physical, mental, emotional, or social limitations improve their well-being. They work across various settings, including healthcare facilities, rehabilitation centers, community organizations, and educational institutions. Their duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Assessing clients’ needs and strengths.
  • Developing and implementing individualized treatment plans that focus on therapeutic recreation activities.
  • Evaluating the progress of clients and modifying interventions as necessary.
  • Collaborating with interdisciplinary healthcare teams to provide holistic care.
